Central Coast Vineyards & Wineries: Gallo-Constellation Impact

Important Central Coast wine industry news—the recent completion of a $810 million Gallo-Constellation wine portfolio deal is expected to finally stabilize local grape and distribution networks.

E. & J. Gallo Winery and Constellation Brands recently announced the completion of the sale of 32 brands.

First sparked in spring 2019 as a $1.7 billion sale, the complex deal took almost 2 years to close because Federal Trade Commission regulators objected to the concentration of so much sparkling wine, brandy, dessert wine, and concentrate with Gallo. This long delay disrupted grape supply and wine distribution channels related to the brands in Paso Robles and beyond. However, the agency approved the revised deal in December 2020 (after several brands and business lines were excluded) and today the company is evaluating how to best integrate the new brands while optimizing operations across California’s Central Coast.

significant achievement in Constellation’s multiyear move toward an elevated portfolio, it offers Gallo more wines in the >$11/bottle market plus more wineries in which to produce them. Templeton-based Wild Horse Winery is now owned by Gallo as part of the impactful deal.

Jenny Heinzen served as Project Manager for the Mergers & Acquisitions firm who sold Wild Horse Winery to Jim Beam Brands back in 2004, which then sold to Constellation in 2007. The founder of Wild Horse is a thrilled client, Ken Volk—and Jenny successfully sold Kenneth Volk Vineyards Winery Facility in December 2020.
