Last week at the Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance Gala, Jenny and Randy were honored as Industry Persons of the Year—a full-circle moment that highlighted the lasting impact of Ag education on our lives. It all started in Ag classrooms, FFA, and hands-on learning that opened doors to our futures.
For Jenny, school wasn’t always easy, and traditional learning didn’t always click. But a high school floral class changed everything. What started as an alternative to biology introduced her to Ag, FFA, and a way of learning that finally made sense. Encouraged by her Ag teacher, she applied to Cal Poly, where she majored in Ag Business and discovered viticulture. In college, she was diagnosed with dyslexia and ADHD, a realization that put her journey into perspective. Without that teacher, that class, and the support of Ag education, she wouldn’t be where she is today.
For Holly, Ag education shaped both her career and her commitment to future students. FFA led her to become a high school Ag teacher, mentoring students for careers in viticulture, farming, and agribusiness. When budget cuts threatened her position during the financial crisis, the Ag community stepped up, fundraising to keep the program alive—because Ag education doesn’t just teach, it sustains industries, careers, and communities.
Now, those programs—and the teachers who make them possible—are at risk again.
Paso Ag Education at Risk
This Tuesday, the Paso Robles school board will vote on teacher layoffs—including an Ag teacher. Across California, Ag programs are often the first to be cut, dismissed as electives despite being critical pathways to careers in farming, viticulture, and agribusiness.
But these programs teach more than agriculture. They build work ethic, responsibility, and hands-on skills that prepare students for real-world success. Paso thrives because of agriculture. Cutting these programs doesn’t just affect students—it weakens the future of our industry.
